For over 14 years CCIU has been working to advance the goals of interreligious understanding, respect, and religious pluralism in the Greater Hartford area. As people of faith we believe that learning about each other’s religion in an honest, open and respectful atmosphere is vital to the thriving of our society and culture. To accomplish these goals CCIU has engaged in a variety of educational activities including, issuing public statements on religious issues, dialogue luncheons, and lectures, and seminars that are geared towards providing an honest and educated exploration of its member religious groups. Our organization is made up of at least two representatives from the following faith groups: Baha-i Faith, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Sikhism, and Unitarian Universalism. Griffis Award Dinner NCCJ and West Hartford Schools will be Honored CCIU will be honoring two great organizations and four wonderful people at its upcoming celebratory dinner on June 9th at Congregation Beth Israel in West Hartford, CT. We would love to have you join us, which you can do by downloading and filling out the invitation found here: Download Invitation The National Conference for Community and Justice along with its Executive Director, Andrea Kandel will be cited for their work to promote understanding and respect for all races, religions, and cultures over the past 80 years. Their work continues to touch the lives of many people, young and old, in the Western Massachusetts and Central Connecticut region with innovative programming that addresses prejudices of all kinds. The West Hartford Public Schools is being recognized for its support of CCIU’s project to reduce religious illiteracy in the classrooms of Connecticut schools. Superintendent Karen List and Social Studies Department Supervisor Jessica Blitzer will be honored for their willingness to help teachers from many area high schools improve their ability to include religious understanding in course work. Prof. Diane Moore, of the Harvard Divinity School, will also be honored as the inspirational leader of the seminar work with area social studies teachers. The keynote address will be presented by H. Bruce McEver, founder of the Religious Literacy Program, Chairman of Berkshire Capital, and supporter of poetry who is also a published poet in his own right. He will explore the difficult and vital issues at work in his longstanding concern with the need for today’s world citizens to understand and respect religious traditions beyond their own. We’ll talk a bit about the projects we’ve been working on this yearin education, the arts, and the multi-religious / multi-cultural sharing of wisdom & ideals. We’ll also share our thoughts about where we hope to venture next.
